Il existe un lien étroit entre l’histoire de la participation du Royaume Uni à l’Union Européenne et l’évolution du droit de la mer. Ce lien a été déterminant lors de l’adhésion de ce pays à l'Union et lors de la définition des principes de base de la Politique Commune de la Pêche. Le droit de la mer constituera le cadre juridique dans lequel vont s’effectuer les négociations de sortie du Royaume Uni de l’Union pour ce qui concerne le chapitre relatif à la pêche. Il servira également de cadre pour la détermination des relations qui s’établiront entre ce pays et les 27 autres Etats membres après sa sortie.

Summary: There is a close link between the history of the participation of the United Kingdom to the European Union and the evolution of the law of the sea. This link has been instrumental during the accession of this country to the Union and the definition of the basic principles of the Common Fisheries Policy. The law of the sea will be the legal framework in which the negotiations for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the Union with regard to the chapter on fisheries will be managed. It will be also the setting for the determination of the relationships that will be established between this country and the 27 other Member States after its release.
