Abstract
The celebration of the hundred years of the First World War is certainly the occasion to focus on the trenches but not enough on the wrecks lying on the bottom of the deep sea bed.
The turning point of the conflict was none the less the battle in the Atlantic Ocean which could have deprived the allied forces of US supplies. These forgotten wrecks which remain difficult to public access are of great interest for the treasures hunters who have more and more resources at their disposal to discover them.
>The legal regime contained in the UNESCO Convention on the protection of the underwater cultural heritage adopted in 2001 was established to prevent this.
France, in becoming party to the Convention in 2013, needs to revise its Code on cultural heritage on some difficult aspects such as the definition of maritime cultural object, the regime dealing with the sanctions to be applied and the risk of creeping jurisdiction.
